Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – General Chronic Pain ^

BlueStarClick here to See 21 ways Dog Heiro Beats The Competition…for content/price to help joints.

1.  Chronic pain in a dog can be from many sources – joint pain (hips, back, elbows, ACL), post joint surgery, old age, skin diseases, cancer, and disease.

2.  University of Chicago, School of Medicine, 2014:  “Chronic pain is a major medical condition that can and should be treated.”

3.  Chronic pain in your dog means sore for over 2 weeks in a row.  This pain can be continuous or intermittent – either always sore, or good part of the day and then bad.

4.  Chronic pain creates multiple hormonal surges, leading to further problems – Insulin, ACTH, and Cortisol all go up with pain.  This can lead to nerve and joint inflammation on top of the original problem and weight loss so great, muscle is lost and mobility is lessened.

ChronicPain5.  Chronic pain creates the “pain triad” of Suffer, Sleeplessness, and Sadness – Your dog may become irritable or “not themselves” due to being exhausted by pain itself and losing sleep.  They become weary and exercise less and less.  This leads to muscle loss and quality of life loss.

6.  Heiro for Dogs helps to keep your dog active and more comfortable.  This will occur quickly; within 14 days if you also go to the right high protein/low carbohydrate feeds.

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Cancer Effects Movement ^

1.  Dog cancer is painful.  BlueStarClick here for Chronic pain signs:  University of Chicago, School of Medicine, 2014 “Cancer pain affects the majority of patients in intermediate or advanced stages of cancer.”

2.  Most cancers are slow in progression, so pain may be for a long time.  Your dog’s joint problems start as stiffness and less movement and progresses.

3.  Treating the cancer in your dog is only one step in therapy – good nutrition, the anti-inflammatory/support herbs, and minerals/vitamins in Heiro for Dogs can assist.

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) ^

Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) – Anatomy

1.  The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) also known as the Cranial Cruciate Ligament, can, in dogs, undergo a slow/subtle degeneration.  In people, it can tear in sudden traumas like in football players, but in dogs, it is a slow, progressing problem.

2.  The problem occurs in the joint between the femur and tibia, which is the knee joint in people.   In dogs, it also can be referred to as the knee, but this joint is in the hind leg – in dogs and horses, it is also called the stifle joint.  If a dog has a knee problem on one side, most likely it is also on the other side as well.  It might appear to be ok but eventually it tears like the first one.  Knee issues in dogs are worse than in people due to dogs bear a lot of weight/stress on that joint even just standing.

SitToTheSideACLTEARbox-testimonial2weeksacl&knees3.  As the ACL ligament slowly degrades, it creates more and more abnormal laxity in the joint which damages the joint capsule and creates abnormal pressure on joint surfaces, leading to cartilage damage and more and more pain.

Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) – Signs

1. Dogs with ACL problems become lame in that leg and the joint in complete tears will wobble badly side to side.  Palpation of the joint may find the problem in severe cases but ½ of ACL tears palpate normal.  A big sign is the dog always sitting sideways and never underneath itself (See Above Picture).  They might try to sit squarely, but quickly get painful and sit at an awkward angle.

2.  Chronic pain signs will occur – weary, tired, “not themselves”, or irritable.  BlueStarClick here for Chronic Pain in-depth information.

Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) – Breeds

Newfoundland’s are the #1 breed to have ACL tears, but all breeds can get it.  Dogs that are overweight put more pressure on the ligament and will have more ACL tears.

Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) – Options

Non-surgical and surgical options (Dog Knee Surgery)

ACLBraceA.    Non-Surgical: Braces, activity restricted, weight loss if too big, anti-inflammatories like Heiro for Dogs to help with comfort and mobility.  Many will try these options to see if can avoid surgery and still have mobility.

B.   Dog Knee Surgery: Sutures or plates put into joint to stabilize.

1)     Suture stabilization – $2000.00 approx. cost
2)     Metal Plate stabilization – $3000-3500.00

(Cost estimates University of Colorado Veterinary School, 2014)

Dog Knee Surgery (ACL) – Heiro Helps

The Dog Heiro Program can help in non-surgical and post-surgical dog knee surgery cases, by providing comfort, a diet that gains muscle to stabilize the joint, and reduce fat that stresses joint.  Post surgically, many dogs will go home on Carprofen, Metacam, or Previcox.  You can add Heiro for Dogs to this regime for quicker recovery.  Eventually, you want your dog off long-term drugs and they can stay on all natural Dog Heiro to reduce inflammation and increase activity.  We want your dog back to peak health faster!

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Dog Back Pain, Dog Back Surgery ^

Dog Back Pain and Dog Back Surgery – Breeds

1.  Many dogs are prone to back pain, especially longer backed breeds/short legged dogs like:  Dachshunds, Bassett Hound, Shih Tzu, Lasa Apso, Corgi, Pekinese, Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, but also larger breeds such as Doberman Pinschers.  Dog back pain can be from dog arthritis or a combination of Disc Disease (IVDD = Intervertebral Disc Disease) and Arthritis.

Dog Back Pain and Dog Back Surgery – Signs

1.  Most often it is a deterioration of discs with ageing, but in Dachshunds can be early in life.  Dog back pain slowly increases as dog arthritis advances in this area.

2. Signs: incoordination, lame, back sore when pet, instability in hind legs that can progress to inability to walk on hind legs or all four legs.

WheeledCartDog Back Pain and Dog Back Surgery – Surgery

Most animals will require dog back surgery to remove debris pressing on spinal cord, but some can adjust to braces with wheels to get around.  At Ontario Veterinary School there is a 90% recovery from this surgery!  Reoccurrences after dog back surgery happen ten times more in Dachshunds than any other breed and in 44.4% of cases in all breeds. If signs reoccur after surgery, many owners will opt for Euthanasia.  Dog Heiro can help in recovery and in extending comfort in dogs having back surgery.

Dog Back Pain and Dog Back Surgery – Owner’s Desires

1. In a Texas A&M Study, owners with IVDD were asked what are the top 5 areas of life or activities in your dog considered most influenced for quality of life?  Mobility was #1.

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Dog Lyme Disease – How to Prevent Now ^

Dog Lyme Disease – Breeds

1.  All dogs can contract Lyme Disease.  According to Cornell’s Veterinary School, it is the most common arthropod-borne disease of dogs.

LymeDog2.  In a study in New York and New Jersey, 90% of dogs have seroconverted (blood shows exposure to Lyme Bacteria), but only about 4% show Dog Lyme disease signs of fever, lameness, swollen lymph nodes, or decreased appetite.  That is 3.2 million dogs in the USA alone having Lyme disease on estimates – about 60,000 dogs in each of the 50 states.

Dog Lyme Disease – Vaccines

According to a Penn State Study, it is important to know that your dog “may not be protected by Lyme vaccines.”

Tick-TheProblem

Dog Lyme Disease – Transmission

1.  The bacteria are transmitted to dogs via ticks.  It takes approximately 24-36 hours of continual tick attachment to transmit the bacteria.  If removed, a tick with 12 hours is “little danger of infection” according to Cornell University Veterinary School.  The problem is the tick has several stages where it can transmit bacteria.  Adult female ticks stay on dogs 5-7 days engorging in blood and are a little easier to see/remove, but the nymph stage is very tiny and easily can be hidden in hair coats.  The nymph phase is most common way Lyme bacteria are transmitted to dogs and people.  Once transmitted, it takes 2-5 months until start to see clinical lameness.

LymeDisease2.  Dogs can also get another bacteria from ticks called Anaplasma which also causes fever, joint pain, lethargy, much like Lyme disease but the good news is that this bacteria is cleared quickly by Tetracycline antibiotics in 1-4 days, while Lyme bacteria needs 3-4 week treatment and it might not clear the bacteria, only help symptoms.

Dog Lyme Disease – Why Sore?

LymeFragmenta. Lyme bacteria and even small pieces of it create inflammatory factors in joint, leading to acute Lyme arthritis.  Dr. Staubinger, Infect Immuno 1998.   BlueStarClick here to read about this problem.

b. Lyme bacteria in dogs created acute arthritis in joints just 66 days after tick bites and lymph nodes around the joints were also inflamed.  In addition to joints and swollen sore lymph nodes, tissues of the heart and intestinal cavity were also inflamed – the whole body is affected.

c. Shoulder and elbow joints of dogs effected most by Dog Lyme disease.  It also caused changes to cartilage, joint capsule, and synovial lining inside the joint.  In addition, Lyme created nerve damage and artery damage around the joint.  It is a grocery list of items in the joint and around the joint being damaged.  Dr. Summers, J Comp Path. 2005.  BlueStarClick here to read about this problem.

7.     Chronic pain signs will occur – weary, tired, “not themselves”, or irritable.  BlueStarClick here for Chronic Pain in-depth information.

Box-DoxyorNsaids8.     The Dog Heiro Program can help in dog’s Lyme disease by providing comfort via Omega’s, Vitamin E, Natural Herbs, MSM, and minerals/vitamins.  In addition, dogs with Lyme disease need the right feeding program and good healthy snacks to fight off this bacteria.  Those are right here on this site.  Your dog may have to go on NSAIDS like Carprofen, Metacam, or Previcox while on antibiotics and you can add Heiro for Dogs to this regime from day 1.  Eventually, you want your dog off long-term drugs and if they still need support, they can continue on all-natural Dog Heiro to reduce inflammation and increase activity.

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Dog Patellar Luxation ^

A.  Dog Patella Luxation – General

PatellarLuxation1.  The dog’s patella (knee cap) is located at your dog’s knee.  The knee for dogs is in the hind leg and is also called the “stifle”.  This area is in the same place where dogs get ACL/Crucate Tears.

2.  When the knee cap moves out of its normal position, it is called Dog Patellar Luxation.  The dog knee cap can move to the inside or outside of its normal place.

B.  Dog Patellar Luxation –  Signs/SymptomsSmall Breeds Prone

1.  Some dogs are born with a Patellar position problem in certain breeds – with smaller and toy breeds more prevalent.  For example (AKC 2014) – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Papillion, Boston Terrier, Dachshund, Yorkshire Terrier, Parson Russell Terrier, Miniature Poodle, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Chihuahua, and French Bulldog.

2.  Dog Patellar Luxation, though, can also occur in larger breeds, from trauma such as Labrador Retriever, Golden Retrievers, Boxer, Husky, St. Bernard, Akita, Giant Schnauzer, Great Pyrenees.

3.  Sudden limping/yelp and skipping with affected leg up – in the beginning, after a few minutes, the dog will lower the leg and move on normal – the Dog Patellar Luxation stops and the Patella moves back into normal position.  Your doctor can feel the laxity and can place the Patella back in normal place if it “sticks” and does not go back on its own, but this is a sign progressing.  As it advances, placing manually does not hold it in place at all.

4.  The popping back in and out of the Patella is painful to your dog – ligaments are being strained and just walking can create more pain. Cartilage becomes worn away so with bone exposed is painful.

5.  In larger breeds with Dog Patella Luxation, it is due to trauma – hit/fall knocks it out of position.  Also, dogs with dog hip pain from Dysplasia and eventually spill also into Dog Patellar Luxation due to abnormal prolonged gait.  Large dogs torn ACL ligaments needing dog knee surgery can also spill into Dog Patellar Luxation due to the instability of the knee.

C.  Dog Patellar Luxation – Management

box - avoid SurgeryUntil cases get advanced, most Luxations are managed.  The Heiro for Dogs Program helps to AVOID FURTHER EPISODES:

1.  Anti-inflammatory herbs/vitamins/minerals decrease pain so move better, build up muscle in the area to help joint/patella in place better.

2.  Build muscle in the area with high protein/low carb dry and canned quality dog foods listed.

3.  Lower fat content on the dog so less stress weight on joint.

D.  Dog Patellar Luxation – Surgery

1.  If these Dog Patellar Luxations are not managed correctly, they need surgery – $1900-2700 is the cost.  Prognosis in big dogs is more guarded due to other problems in the hind end on top of the luxation (ACL, Dysplasia). Owners will use Heiro For Dogs to help with post-op recovery and movement.

Dog Joint Problems and Dog Joint Issues – Dog Arthritis ^

A.  Dog Arthritis describes joint pain – it can be in any joint in the body.

Places for Arthritis

B.  Many Causes of Dog Arthritis:

1.  Dog Arthritis from ligament/tendon damage creating unstable joint
BlueStarSee Dog Knee Surgery (ACL)
BlueStarSee Dog Patellar Luxation

2.  Dog Arthritis from inflammatory diseases – BlueStarSee Dog Lyme Disease.  Also, inflammatory diseases of organs that shower the body with damaging mediators – Kidney, liver, bowel diseases can trigger Dog Arthritis.  Example:  Cushings Disease.

3.  Dog Arthritis from Cancer – structures around the  joints can be affected, pushed on, invaded as well as mediators again tracking from Cancer distally to joints. BlueStarSee Cancer in Dogs.

KneeArthritis4.  Dog Arthritis from Old Age – cartilage wear, old tendon/ligament injuries, bone changes, not holding joints together well – this laxity creates joint instability and grinding/weight on structures.

5.  Dog Arthritis for over or under weight.

a.  Too much weight strains the ability of support structures in the joint.  Too little weight and there is not enough muscle to support and hold joints in place.  BlueStarSee Dog Calories a day for proper way to lose or gain weight.

b.  Hormonal Changes – Thyroid High or low:  Hyper- or Hypo-Thyroid can effect weight and muscle mass.  If overweight, Insulin becomes higher creating more and more fat (Insulin Resistance).  If Insulin Resistance is not stopped, Diabetes can occur. Cushings Disease also can contribute to weight problems.

box-dogsonMeds

 6.  Dog Arthritis from breed pre-disposition to other problems leading to secondary Arthritis.

a.  Dachshunds with Dog Back Pain from IVDD. BlueStarClick here for Dog Back Surgery.

b.  St. Bernard, Newfoundlands with torn ACL problems.

c.  German Shepherd with Dog Hip pain from Dysplasia.

d.  Chihuahua with Dog Patellar Luxation.
